RiVERSE
In this new phase of project NERO, we invited iconic conceptual artist and poet, Kalen Iwamoto, to enter in dialogue with ALEXANDER Schellow’s frames, to create a new layer of awareness on the river’s health, through a multimedia installation, including a collection of dynamic NFTs to be mapped on a free-standing monolith measuring the river’s health in real-time.
This series of dynamic NFTs brings together the drawings of Alexander Schellow and the writing of Kalen Iwamoto in a palimpsest that traces the fate of the Kifissos river. The drawings and text unearth the stories of a buried river, while setting up a dialogue between its (ill)health and its urgent, yet forsaken, state.
The images depict scenes connected to the river as filtered through the memory and artistic practice of Alexander Schellow. From a bank of hundreds of such images, the NFT displays one that corresponds to the real time pollution level of the Kifissos river, so the drawings change to reflect the health of the river. Various data that indicate the relative health of the river are selected, then tied to a specific parameter of the drawing (such as density, tonality, or contrast). When pollution is elevated, the displayed drawing is heavier, darker, denser, while a drop in pollution replaces this with drawings that are lighter and sparser, thus revealing more of the text that lies beneath.
This stream of text, crawling by slowly below the drawings, is a conceptual poem derived from stories about the Kifissos river. Using interviews about the river with those affected by its absence, Kalen Iwamoto applies a conceptual writing process to distill new lines from this raw textual material. The importance of these stories, of the Kifissos, and of the water crisis more generally is signaled by the large, bold, red text scrolling across the screen in the style of a news ticker, a literary-visual form intended to communicate important and urgent information quickly. Yet, the text is difficult, if not impossible, to read due to the slow scrolling speed and the overlayed images: the Kifissos story, pressing as it is, has not been getting the attention it deserves.
Can art have a hand in reversing this state of neglect?
Will people act to save the river, making the stories legible?
Or will the pollution levels remain high and the stories obscured?

Schellow’s research originates in an interest for methods of memory (re)construction, which he developed and pursued in daily drawing and animation practice.
The hybrid processes materializes into projects that have been shown widely international, 2023/24 a.o. at the Musée d’Art Contemporain de Lyon, the 18th International Architecture Exhibition La Biennale di Venezia, FECIMO Buenos Aires, Moving Image Arts Festivals Toronto, the Courtisane Festival Gent, Dance Source Houston, Dom36 Almaty or the Hamburger Kunsthalle.
In the last year Schellow’s works received awards a.o. @ the Future Of Film Awards Macedonia, Varsity Film Expo Zimbabwe, Sittannavasal and Thilsri International Film Festivals India, Nitiin Festival Malaysia, the Ponza Film Awards Italy and the Kim Ki Duk International Film Festival South Korea.
In addition collaborations in recent years have focused in particular on the creation of specific archives (e.g. Colonial Family Films, Belgium) or on interfaces of human/digital (re)cognition, especially in the field of current deep learning developments.
His pedagogical practice has taken him to universities, among others, in London, Paris, Tirana, Singapore, Mexico City and Brussels, where he founded AnimLAB and since 2013 holds a professorship in animation, heading an MA of more than human practices at the erg - école de recherche graphique.
ARTISTS
-
Kalen Iwamoto is a conceptual crypto writer and artist exploring the intersection of art and language on the blockchain. She is a Japanese-Canadian based in France.
Kalen’s work takes blockchain technology and crypto culture as its point of departure, and focuses on playfulness, exploration, and experimentation to push the boundaries of conceptual writing and art, and the NFT medium. Always faithful to the concepts that drive her pieces, Kalen uses various forms and media, such as micro autofiction, new media poetry, metaversal art installations, to create new reading experiences.
She is the founder of the crypto writers discord and co-founder of theVERSEverse, a literary gallery where poems are works of art.
WEB3 TECHNOLOGY + BLOCKCHAIN
Our mission is to create a protocol linking the NFTs’ smart contract to an Oracle that feeds real-time data on the river’s health, to the tokens.
The artists, the engineer and the developer are defining a set of parameters that will affect the “image” in real-time, translating the data into an immersive experience accessible to all. The token will work as a visual thermometer reflective of the data.
Being inscribed onto the blockchain the data will be open-source, transparent and immutable. The project will serve the scientific community as a case study for the monitoring of their own rivers’ health, while educating and inspiring local populations to be part of the conversation.
The NFTs will be hosted on a dedicated webpage, while mapped on a monolith in a public location giving access to the data to all, allowing the global community to be part of the conversation.
THE RIVER WHISPERERS
One of the pillars of the project is to give a voice to the silent majority. Through the website and the free-standing four-sided structure equipped with an NFT, the audience is sent on a virtual journey where they will be able to record a message to the world (anonymously) and collect a digital badge at the end of the tunnel, making them “River Whisperers”. These digital badges are a proof of participation (PAP).
THE GUARDIANS OF THE RIVER
A limited collection of one on one dynamic NFTs 20% of funds will be dedicated to one organization for the data maintenance and to research and development for restoring the health of the Kifissos River. The parameters to select the receiving will be determined in the next couple of months.
10% - Production
10% - Development & Scientists
50% - Artists
10% - NFT Market place
All royalties will be perceived by the artists (70%) & organization (30%)
